President, CEO and Co-Founder of ALGIX, LLC, holds a B.S. in Electronics Engineering Technology and brings significant experience, commercial visibility and key relationships within the dairy, paints and industrial coatings, and household products industries. Through his previous company that he started and built into one of the premier packaging companies in the USA, Mr. Van Drunen has developed strategic relationships with senior executives from high profile companies such as, Mott’s, Walmart, Unilever, Dean Foods, Sherwin Williams, BASF, Dupont, ECOLAB, Graham Plastics, Berry Plastics among others. Ryan W. Hunt
Chief Technology Officer, Board of Director and Co-Founder of ALGIX, LLC, holds a B.S. in Physics and a M.S. in Biological and Agricultural Engineering from the University of Georgia. Mr. Hunt has been involved with research in the UGA, Biorefining and Carbon Cycling Program. He has over five years of research experience on algae biomass production, wastewater treatment from agricultural and industrial sources, phyto-hormone research, photosynthetic optimization using LED’s and chlorophyll fluorescence feedback method and system, algae harvesting using flocculation, centrifugation and filtration, downstream processing, drying, milling, pelletization, bioplastic formulation, compounding and conversion of algae via extrusion, compression and injection molding of over 300 algal-based formulations. Ryan has published five journal articles and holds four patents on algae-related technologies.
Jason Kolb, M.D.
Vice President, Director of ALGIX Water Solutions. Jason joined Algix after 10 years as a practicing emergency physician. Although the setting is now entirely different, many of the core tasks as Vice President of Algix are similar to what was required for success in the ER: managing large amounts of complex data, problem solving, effective communication, multitasking, and decision-making. In addition to overseeing the wastewater treatment initiatives and Jamaica operations of Algix, Jason also assists CEO Mike Van Drunen in vision casting and detail execution across the company.
Mark Ashton Zeller
Director of Research and Development, holds B.S. degrees in Biology and Chemistry. He has four years of laboratory teaching experience and two years of research focused on protein modification, genetic engineering, and protein biopolymer synthesis. He recently has formulated and characterized biopolymers for performance characteristics including mechanical and thermal properties. Ashton has been paramount in the research and development of algae harvesting, drying, and compounding formulation and scale up.
Director of Engineering, ALGIX, LLC. Jon brings many years of leadership and manufacturing experience to Algix after 20 years combined at General Motors and Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy. Jon served as the Launch Manager at General Motors where he was responsible for the body shop conversion from the Chevy Cavalier to the Cobalt. Jon oversees all aspects of engineering throughout the company which currently include the Algent, Solaplast, and Algix Jamaica divisions. Jon also serves on the executive leadership team to create the vision and culture at Algix.
ALGENT Director. Eric has worked in the field of Biorefining and Carbon Cycling for over five years at the University of Georgia’s Biological and Agricultural Engineering Department. He has been involved with pilot scale processing of various types of biomass for value added products, including drying, milling, classification, pelletization, and thermochemical and biological conversion. Eric now oversees the algae harvesting and drying operations of ALGENT, a division of ALGIX, LLC.
Logistics Director, Solaplast and ALGIX. Todd entered the United States Air Force as a helicopter crew chief. While in the USAF worked for combat rescue and served on rescue missions, while coordinating and directing helicopter crew in all operations. After 4 years of service got out and obtain a BS degree in radiologic technology and worked and trained in the operating room, emergency department as well as inpatient and outpatient facilities. Todd is in the process of obtaining his BS as well as a minor in biology.
Director of Pond Side Operations, ALGENT. Butch and his family have extensive experience in aquaculture in the southeastern US and is considered one of the top experts in the cultivation of catfish. Butch, along with his son, daughter and their families manage their family farm that has been in the family for 180 years. Butch is the Chairman of Catfish Farmers of America, Secretary of Alabama Catfish Feed Mill, former President of Alabama Catfish Producers, A Director of The Catfish Institute, board member of Dallas County Farmers Federation, Manager of Algyonyx, and a member of The Safford Baptist Church, Safford Alabama. Butch’s role is to oversee and facilitate the growth and expansion of algae harvesting from aquaculture farms in Alabama and Mississippi.
Sales and Marketing
Sales Manager, with over 25 years experience in direct sales and marketing for a variety of industries. John has been involved in the ALGIX vision since its inception and is responsible for aligning the product development with commercial needs.
Executive Assistant to the CEO and Director of Marketing. Denise Hobart holds a B.S. Degree in Business Management from the University of Dayton and is a graduate from the international studies program from the University of Lancaster in Lancaster, England. Over the last 25 years, Ms. Hobart has refined and proven her business skills as a successful business owner. In additional, she is a professional pilot flying private aircraft charter as a commercial pilot. Her passion for aviation has lead her to own a national and internationally recognized Part 141/61 flight school and Part 135 aircraft charter company. American Winds Aviation is a three time award winner, has made FAA history in flight training.
Sales Executive, attended the University of Purdue Calumet as well as Indiana Wesleyan University. Entered the sales profession five years ago and has excelled in leading sales efforts. Joined Algix in February of 2013, but has been inspired by the Algix vision since early 2012. Jorge is responsible for the sale of Solaplast resins for both domestic and international markets.
eCommerce Manager, Buyalgae.com. Rachel’s responsibilities include product/feedstock sourcing and acquisition, managing web inquiries, shipping and handling of warehouse orders, and communicating algae news and publications that reflect current trends in the algae industry.
Katie Van Drunen
Office manager for Algix, LLC. Attended Kent State University and received a bachelor degree in Business Management. Katie managed a department in a medical billing company for 2 years. Katie has been involved with the human resources and office management of ALGIX since its inception in 2010, and officially joined in 2013. Katie has been critical to business, procurement and human resources related activities.
